History

Danbury was founded in 1684 when several families walked from Norwalk, CT and purchased the land from a group of Native Americans. The original settlers named the town Danbury after a British town. On April 19, 1889 it was chartered as a city, and today is the seventh largest in Connecticut! It became a large center for hat manufacturing and it is believed that the first hat ever produced in the United States was made in Danbury. The hat industry lasted for many years but began to fade out in the 1950s; the last hat factory closed in 1989.

In the year 2000, Danbury had a population of just below 75,000. Of this population 68 percent were white non-Hispanic and 15 percent were Hispanic. Other nationalities included African American,
Asian and Indian. Danbury is approximately 42 square miles. The city’s government is headed by the Mayor and the Common Council.
