Danbury Lake Communities
In the 1700s, Danbury was known mostly for its hats. It even earned its title, The Hat City, as a tribute to its famous millinery industry. The hat-making business continued to prosper until the 1950s. Now, Danbury has many other industries besides hats and a lake to attract tourists and residents. If you move here, you will see that the Danbury lake communities are like the lake itself: made by man and beautiful.
Candlewood Lake
The Connecticut Light and Power Company created this lake in 1929. Their original intent was to generate hydraulic power, but the tourists and residents today stir up more energy than the plant. Lakefront communities such as Aqua Vista, Cedar Heights and Pleasant Acres were developed right away. During the 1940s, these communities were full of seasonal cottages. Over the past two decades, however, more homes have been converted to year-round residences.
Housing
Today, there are 75 communities that surround Candlewood Lake. The median price of a home in Danbury is $295,000. Naturally, homes in the lake communities tend to cost more than the average home. If you want a home on the waterfront, home prices start at $300,000 for a cottage and can cost over $1 million for a waterfront estate. Homes with access to the water will cost at least $125,000.
Lakefront Living
Living on a lake comes with a few obvious benefits. Water activities such as boating, waterskiing and swimming are all very accessible. Many of the lakefront communities also offer residents private beach access and other amenities such as boat slips, tennis, golf and summer camps. All these activities combined with a striking natural beauty can make each day on the lake feel like a well-earned vacation.
Richter Park
If you love golf, you simply must try a round of golf at Richter Park. This park is rated as one of the top 50 golf courses in the United States. It also happens to be the #1 course in Connecticut.
The golfing here is great, but this park has so much more to offer as well. You can go hiking or jogging on the Harold P. and Isabel T. Farrington trails. The Richter House is a cultural arts center that offers art, music, theater, dance and drama for visitors and residents as well.
The Danbury lake communities may cost you a bit more than the average home, but the value is well worth the price. Homes in this area are much more affordable than the ones you’d find in the more affluent towns nearby. Big cities like Hartford and Manhattan are less than two hours away, so you can still take day trips to visit those old, urban crowds. If you enjoy the outdoors, this small town may be the perfect place for you. Come to see Candlewood Lake and Richter Park stay to enjoy the high quality of life.
